Manchester City are in a terrible position right now. It seems like Pep Guardiola's team, for whom winning was second nature not too long ago, has completely forgotten how to get over the line. Changes are needed and expect there to be plenty of movement in January. Could that include the arrival of a former Celtic player?
There are quite a few players who could leave Celtic in January, bringing in transfer fees in return. Alexandro Bernabei and Luis Palma are names that come to mind immediately in that regard.
The Scottish club could be handed another significant cash boost though. That is if Jeremie Frimpong finally makes his long-awaited Bayer Leverkusen exit and joins one of European football's top teams having being been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool and several others in recent times.
There is rumoured to be a €40 million release clause in Frimpong's contract and Celtic are believed to hold a significant sell-on percentage. So, a major windfall could be on its way for the Hoops.
Pep Guardiola could hand major windfall to Celtic
It looks like Frimpong is someone who Manchester City do have their eye on but the final call on any arrival will be made by Guardiola. As reported by Football Insider, Mick Brown said:
"I’m told he’s one they’ve been looking at.
"But it’s very much a question about what Guardiola views his priorities as, because he’ll make the final decision around any incoming players."
Kyle Walker's performances this season have been a cause for worry for Manchester City though and one has to wonder if the time has come to find a replacement for the club legend. Brown said:
"I’ve heard they want to improve their defense because they’ve given far too many goals away.
“It’s alright playing an attacking full-back when you’re getting your defending right, but they haven’t been doing that this season.
“That’s why there are question marks around Kyle Walker’s performances.
“That solid defensive ability used to be a key part of his and City’s game, we’ve seen great battles with him and the likes of Vinicius Jr and Mbappe.
“But all of a sudden he’s not winning those battles against worse players than them.
“So the element of defensive stability he brought to the side has been lost, and I think that’s what City will look to bring in rather than a real attack-minded wing-back type player."
In that aspect of the game, it does not get much better than Frimpong right now. He has been absolutely superb going forward during his time at Bayer Leverkusen and has been one of the most effective full-backs in all of football. So, it is not hard to see why both Manchester City and Liverpool might be eyeing him at the moment. Let's see what the future holds.
