With the January transfer window merely days away from opening, Celtic have a lot of work to do if they are to have any hope of turning things around in the second half of the campaign. Wilfried Nancy started his run with four losses on the trot. The fact that he was not sacked after that goes on to show that the board badly want to see him succeed at Parkhead and prove their decision to appoint him as the right one.
Celtic have won their previous two matches. But they have been far from perfect on those occasions as well, looking pretty shaky at the back.
Defence wins championships. At the moment, Celtic do not have one. At the very least, they do not have the right personnel for the defensive structure that Nancy wants his team to have.
Stephen Welsh has been in tremendous form away on loan at Motherwell. Many had suggested recalling him and putting him straight into the starting XI. Celtic have seemingly made a decision regarding the defender already. And it is not one that his fans will be happy with.
'Open to offers' - Sky Sports man confirms Celtic transfer news
As reported by Anthony Joseph, Celtic are open to offers for Welsh. The Hoops are unlikely to take up the recall option, which expires mid-January. They’re happy for him to continue at Motherwell but also open to bids for a low fee, with a significant sell-on.
That seems to be the end of the discussion when it comes to the chances of Welsh being brought back. It looks like the club are instead happy to part ways with him on a permanent basis if the right offer comes in.
And to be fair, Welsh did spend several seasons at Celtic Park but was never able to make the grade as a starter. Just because he is doing well out on loan does not mean that has changed.
