Joel Mvuka made his debut for Celtic today in their Scottish Cup victory over Dundee, and fans are making their thoughts known about his first game in the Hoops.
The winger was the only late signing who started this game, with Junior Adamu named on the bench. From the start, Mvuka seemed nervous to take players on. He opted to pass it backwards sometimes instead, which is something that Celtic fans want to see less of.
Although he has very good pace, he didn't really use it to his advantage on his debut. He gave fans the impression that he wasn't willing to press or track back to defend, and some believe the physicality of Scottish football may have rattled him.
To make things worse, the player was hooked at half-time. He doesn't appear to be someone who strengthens the squad, and yet again, we are back to relying on older players like James Forrest to do the heavy lifting. At a club like Celtic, that shouldn't be the case.
Don't rule Mvuka out
The last thing the Hoops can afford to do is rule Mvuka out this early in his Celtic career. They were ready to offer him a long, permanent deal before a last-minute medical issue meant that it had to be changed to a loan, so someone must see something in him.
His pace can be a great asset to Celtic if Mvuka figures out how to use it properly. He has some nervousness about his game that you just can't afford to have, and he needs to work on losing that quickly if he wants to thrive.
Some fans have already ruled him out, but manager Martin O'Neill won't give up that easily. We can probably expect to see more of him, especially if O'Neill takes the time to work out his best position.
People have noted he may have been better off playing on the left, but against Dundee, he was utilised on the right. Although his link-up play with Julian Aurajo has been noted as one of the positives to take from the game.
All it takes is one moment in football, and he could find that. If he pops up in a massive game with a goal or an assist, everything could flip on its head.
One thing he can take from this is that he'll still be higher in the pecking order than Michel-Ange Balikwisha, who has been disastrous for the Hoops this season. It's just a question now of whether he can secure his starting place or not.
