Over the past few weeks, we have seen Celtic being linked with a long list of players. One of them is Evan Ferguson. Once considered the next £100 million player in the Premier League, the Irishman's career trajectory has been heading downwards for the past couple of seasons and he clearly needs a change of scenery.
Ferguson spent the first half of last season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion before being sent on loan to West Ham United, where he reunited with Graham Potter. Nothing worked though, as he managed just one goal over the course of the campaign.
A lot of the time, it is about confidence for strikers. When it comes to Ferguson, that seems to be at rock bottom right now. So, he needs to go somewhere where he can find his goalscoring touch again.
A club like Celtic might be perfect for that. There would be no lack of chances, and admittedly, the opposition is a step down in competition from the Premier League as well. But now, it looks like there is a new hurdle to that move happening.
'Offered' - Major Evan Ferguson news that will interest Celtic fans
While Celtic have been named favourites in the race to sign the Irishman, there are others in the race as well. As reported by Football Insider, PSV Eindhoven have been offered the chance to sign on loan for next season.
Of course, going to PSV might be a good move for Ferguson as well. And most European football fans would consider the Eredivisie as a more competitive league than the Scottish Premiership.
It is unclear whether Celtic do actually hold an interest in signing Ferguson on loan this summer or whether it is all just transfer talk. One way or another, it looks like we will find out pretty soon.
