When Matt O'Riley left Celtic in the summer, the club were in need of a talisman following the departure of their best player. They did make a record signing, bringing in Arne Engels from FC Augsburg alongside making several other additions. But it is someone already at Parkhead who ended up filling those boots.
It was none other than Nicolas Kuhn. The German winger had been signed last winter from Rapid Vienna and had had spells at clubs like Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Ajax as a youngster although he failed to make the grade at any of those three giants.
His early form at Celtic was not much to write home about either. Coming into this campaign, there were doubts about his place in the starting XI.
Kuhn has flipped the switch this season though and looks like a completely different player. He has not only been Celtic's best and most consistent performer by a country mile but he has also proven himself in big games. Unsurprisingly, that has caught the eye of teams around Europe including a high-profile one from the Premier League.
Newcastle United could make move for Celtic superstar
As reported by Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are drawing up a shortlist of right wingers. They have scouted Kuhn.
Of course, Celtic do have a bit of an unhappy history with Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe. The Hoops had pushed to sign him as their manager in the summer of 2021 but that did not transpire in the final steps.
Ultimately, it worked out pretty well for both parties though. Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Kuhn and whether Newcastle United do end up making a move to sign him or not. Do not expect him to leave in the middle of the campaign though.
