Christian Eriksen has been linked with a move to Celtic recently with his future at Manchester United up in the air. The Danish midfielder's current deal at Old Trafford is believed to run out next summer and he is not expected to be handed an extension. That has led to speculation regarding a potential switch to Parkhead as a free agent or perhaps even in January for a bargain transfer fee.

Eriksen's Danish international teammate, Kasper Schmeichel, joined Celtic in the summer. And he has quickly established himself as one of the club's most important players as well as a popular figure amongst the fans.

Eriksen is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League over the past decade or so. But that does not mean that he would be an automatic starter at Celtic at this point in his career.

At least not in the eyes of Neil Lennon. As reported by Glasgow World, the Celtic legend said to BoyleSports:

"With the talent Celtic have at their disposal at the moment, I’m not sure that Christian Eriksen would get into the team. He is a classy player and always has been, but I’m not sure who he would come in to replace. You’d have to consider the wages he’d want as well. I can’t see it happening and I’m not sure it would suit the club at the moment."

To be honest, Lennon has got a point here. Celtic are stacked when it comes to their options in the middle of the park right now.

Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate are pretty much automatic starters at this point in time and for good reason. They have proven themselves in a Celtic jersey already and continue to perform at a high level on a consistent basis.

It is the third midfield spot which seems to be up for grabs at this point. But there are plenty of options available to Brendan Rodgers already. Arne Engels became the club's record signing in the summer but has not convinced so far. Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo are also in the mix, and have impressed whenever given a chance by the manager.
