This summer transfer window promises to be an important one for Celtic. The club showed progress in the Champions League this season, making it to the knockout phase and taking Bayern Munich to the limit over two legs. Now, they need to build on this and make sure it does end up being a one-off. On the other hand, with the Rangers on the verge of a takeover, the Hoops need to make sure that they maintain their lead in Scotland.
For that to happen, Celtic will need to bring in some quality players. Hopefully, some proven names are brought in rather than making multiple project signings in hopes that a few work out.
If rumours are anything to go by, it looks like Celtic could be looking to strengthen in the middle of the park. Could a former Rangers youth standout be an option for Brendan Rodgers' side?
The player we are talking about is Billy Gilmour, the Scottish international who is currently at Napoli. As reported by the Daily Record, Pat Nevin said:
"So you've got two choices. Choice number one is accept that's your career, that's your life, that's what happens. You are going to play with some great clubs, win some trophies, people are going to love you and you are going to play until you're 40 because you're going to be relaxed and that's a good career for Billy.
"The other possibility, I wonder if Celtic and Rangers need a controlling, creative player. It is that one where, if he comes up to Celtic or Rangers, he takes over from Callum McGregor or becomes the new Barry Ferguson. That's it."
Napoli midfielder tipped for blockbuster Celtic move
Gilmour has always been considered a major talent but it has never really worked out for him, wherever he has been. Right now, he is on the verge of winning the Serie A with Napoli, who hold a three-point lead over Inter Milan with just three games left to be played.
Someone like him could be a decent addition to this Celtic team but for now, he is a Napoli player. It will also be important to see what kind of a transfer fee the Italian club would be looking for to part ways with the midfielder.
Even though Gilmour is not getting regular starts for Napoli, he has still played a role and made 27 appearances across all competitions, amassing 1216 minutes on the pitch for Antonio Conte's side over the campaign.
