Martin O'Neill is likely to walk away from his Celtic job, according to a former Hoop. There is now speculation aplenty surrounding O'Neill after three straight defeats that have included two Old Firm fixtures and a Europa League opener.
The Bhoys have shown no ability to manage big games, also suffering a four-goal collapse in the Champions League this season, and it doesn't look as though anyone knows how to fix what is going on.
There are personnel issues - Celtic are sorely missing a holding midfielder, which is a real issue in any system, but despite making changes, O'Neill cannot seem to find the answers.
After an almost historically poor Old Firm last week that saw Celtic lose 3-0 at Ibrox, the Bhoys were flat again on Sunday, this time losing 1-0 but failing to land a glove on their rivals, even with the advantage of playing at home with no away fans in the stadium.
Even in the last 10 minutes, when you expect any team in any game to be pushing for an equaliser when losing by one goal, Celtic failed to create any sort of danger, and it's difficult for anyone to put their finger on what is going on in this team.
But it is O'Neill's job to fix it, even if it is not really his fault, and he knows that. In fact, speaking after the game on Sunday, the veteran boss hinted at walking away if he reviews the games and feels there is nothing he can do to fix it.
Those comments have led to speculation aplenty, and former Celtic player Paul Slane believes O'Neill may well be considering a departure.
Speaking on Open Goal’s Keeping The Ball On The Ground, he said: “I think Martin O’Neill will walk.
“Some of the things you’re seeing is absolutely baffling. Something needs to change. The players look completely lost on the ball and off the ball, every player’s under par, when that comes to that stage mate something needs to change.
“They’re trying everything, they’re trying changing shape, they’re trying different personnel and even when they’re changing personnel, they’re getting that all wrong as well, so something needs to give.”
It's unclear what the Celtic's board is on finding a new manager at this stage, but they will at least be discussing the situation after three damaging defeats, even if it is clear that they hold the most blame in this situation.
