Some believe that it is far too early to make a judgment on Wilfried Nancy as a manager. Then there are those who think that we have already seen everything that there is to see. The Frenchman has lost his first three games in charge of Celtic, including last weekend's Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren. This is the worst start any manager has ever had in the history of the club.
Naturally, a lot of fans want Nancy to be sacked already. But that is unlikely to happen. The board are already under tremendous pressure and they will surely give the Frenchman every chance possible to prove that the decision to appoint him was the right one.
Of course, the same could have been said about Russell Martin at Rangers, but eventually, he was shown the exit door after 123 days. There is a similar feeling of inevitability around Nancy as well, as he just does not seem cut out for the job.
What has put the board under even more pressure is the timing of the appointment. Martin O'Neill had the team on a great run, winning seven out of his eight games in charge as interim manager. He should have been kept, at least until the League Cup final. But the club decided Nancy had to come in immediately and they have paid the price for that mistake.
Martin O'Neill open to blockbuster return as Celtic manager
Considering Nancy's start to life as a Celtic manager, it is pretty likely that he will end up getting sacked at some point in the future, no matter how long the club try to postpone it. Of course, we would like to be proven wrong and for the Frenchman to turn out to be a phenomenal success in Glasgow. That does not feel very likely though.
On the other hand, it looks like O'Neill is open to a third spell as the club's manager. As reported by The Celtic Star, he said on talkSPORT, when asked how he would respond if the Hoops were to approach him again later in the season:
"That would be hypothetical. It’s like asking me if my next birthday is 74? Which it would be.”
“I suppose deep down, really, if that manager of Roma, Gasperini, who is only about 26 months younger than me… Yeah, why not. I think I have as much energy as most managers at the minute."
Well, at least that is one positive. And if Nancy ends up getting sacked, it would be a good idea to make that call once again.
