Celtic are still basking in the afterglow of another Premiership title, but fans are eagerly awaiting news over the fate of the manager role at Parkhead.

Martin O'Neill did a sterling job after returning to the club in January, but the 74-year-old has admitted it may be difficult for him to continue running the day-to-day and keeping up with the demands of domestic and European football.

O'Neill said after the season that he had not spoken to the Celtic chiefs about the future, with all focus remaining on that memorable final game against Hearts and the Scottish Cup final. Those conversations were to hold, and there is now a fresh update on the timeline.

O'Neill's Celtic future latest

According to the Daily Record, discussions have now been planned between O'Neill and the club's lead shareholder Dermot Desmond following the conclusion of the season.

Reports have suggested that the Bhoys have been considering their options over the last week or so, lining up a shortlist of potential options to see what they may have available to them as they prepare for talks with O'Neill.

That should come as no surprise, given O'Neill himself has admitted he may find the role difficult to take on over a longer period.

“It's lovely to end up and think that you've proved something," he said after the Scottish Cup final. "But I'm never sure that you stop asking, ‘Can I keep on doing it? Is that still there? I think if I could clear my head and start again, I think could do it, but I wouldn't be really sure, not at this moment.”

The discussions with the club are likely to take place in the coming days, with meetings now said to be locked in. Celtic fans will be eagerly awaiting the result of those dicsussions, but O'Neill is likely to have the blessing of the fans whether he stays or leaves, given the hard-earned respect he has from the fans for what he has done at Parkhead.

Who Celtic could turn to if O'Neill does leave is far from clear, but the club has a relatively successful record when it comes to choosing managers, rarely finding themselves having to move on quickly - Wilfried Nancy aside.

The Bhoys also have the benefit of time, realistically not needing to rush into a decision over the next couple of weeks should they find themselves on the recruitment drive.
