Former Celtic loan star Marcelo Saracchi remains open to rejoining the club someday. The left-back spent last season on loan at Parkhead, backing up Kieran Tierney and making a sizable contribution across the season.
Saracchi made 19 league appearances and helped Celtic to a league and cup double. Available for just £1.5million in the summer, it was expected the Bhoys would move to keep him around, but they never made an approach to Boca Juniors over a permanent deal.
That was even more surprising after they failed to sign a left-back until the final day of the window, when they settled for 18-year-old Landon Emenalo, who joined on a loan deal from Chelsea, and he hasn't even been included in the UEFA squad.
That means Celtic only have centre-back Liam Scales as back-up for injury-prone Tierney, which is utterly baffling after Saracchi is a solid job last season.
But the decision was made not to pursue his signature, and the full-back ultimately ended up joining Houston Dynamo in MLS. Still, the Uruguayan is not ruling out a Celtic return someday.
“Do I hope I’ll be able to play for Celtic again? I think yes. Honestly, the story with me and Celtic isn’t finished yet," he told the Daily Record.
“I would like to go back. But it’s just on their end to see their interest and their intention in wanting me there. But things could change. There are always solutions, so I think yes.”
“I wish them the best. It’s a club that will keep fighting, keep going. It’s a huge fanbase, a huge club. I wish them the best and hopefully in the future we’re able to reconnect again.”
Saracchi is already 28 years of age, so he doesn't have too much time to secure a Celtic return, not that it is up to him. The Bhoys should have made a move in the summer, and when they sat there in the final day of the window without a left-back signing, they surely knew that.
But it was one of a number of mistakes they made in a clumsy transfer window. Ultimately, it has left them with an ill-prepared squad, and it is showing in the tougher games.
Celtic have lost four of their five big games this season, and it was always going to be the case that the issues were disguised against smaller teams but became obvious in tough games.
