We have seen a few former Celtic players make their mark at Liverpool over the years. Kenny Dalglish is arguably the Merseyside club's best ever. Virgil van Dijk is also someone who has reached immense heights at Anfield after first making a name for himself at Parkhead. Another name that deserves mention is Andrew Robertson although he never made it past the youth ranks with the Hoops.
Now, it looks like Liverpool have their sights on another former Celtic player. One who has already achieved a lot since departing Parkhead.
When Celtic signed Jeremie Frimpong, he was a little-known youth player at Manchester City. There were not many expectations surrounding the Dutchman and nobody would have been surprised if he never went on to make a senior appearance for the Hoops.
Instead, Frimpong established himself as a Celtic starter just months later, moving ahead of Hatem Abd Elhamed in the pecking order. He would leave the club a year and a half later to join Bayer Leverkusen and has emerged as one of the best full-backs in world football since then.
Liverpool want former Celtic player with €40m release clause
Frimpong is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the near future and it looks like he is on the radar of Liverpool. Christian Falk informed CaughtOffside in his exclusive Fact Files column:
"True: That Jeremie Frimpong is on the shortlist at Liverpool. He’s a very special player. He can play many positions and that makes him so interesting for Liverpool.
“There are no concrete talks yet at the moment, but he’s in their sights.
“The head coach at Liverpool, Arne Slot, is Dutch, and it’s evident he has a good relationship with Dutch players. There is another thing worth mentioning: Trent Alexander-Arnold said it’s very good for him to have a coach who is explaining to him very clearly how to play his position. This shows Slot likes to have some tactical variation.
“Xabi Alonso does this as well; Frimpong is not always playing the same way at Bayer Leverkusen. If you want to change your system during a match, he can be a secret weapon. Frimpong has always tended to show this, especially against Bayern Munich; he was always a key player when he started or came in off the bench.
“This makes him so interesting for his potential suitors. However, a release clause of €40m is a lot."
The speculation makes sense considering Trent Alexander-Arnold's uncertain future with the club. His contract with Liverpool runs out next summer and the Englishman has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Frimpong is someone who has a lot of similarities to Trent. He is brilliant going forward although there are question marks over the defensive side of his game as well. Of course, it is worth mentioning that Celtic are believed to hold a pretty hefty sell-on clause.
