Former Celtic centre-back Malik Nawrocki has suffered a crushing injury blow just weeks after leaving the club. Nawrocki never really fit in at Parkhead, making only 13 league appearances after his arrival from Legia Warsaw.
Loan spells with Hannover followed as he looked to get more regular football, and the 25-year-old was ultimately sold this summer. He joined French club Lens, and he has already made two league appearances, but his season is now likely over.
Nawrocki has ruptured his ACL, and it's likely he will be the best part of a year out injured as a result. It's a big blow for the defender, who will have been hoping to hit the ground running for his new club.
Lens posted on their social media channels: "Hang in there, Maik. Seriously injured, Maik Nawrocki is suffering from a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery. The entire club stands by its defender and sends him its best wishes for a speedy recovery.”
An official statement added: “Maik Nawrocki has suffered a severe injury and a complete rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament. The Lens number 3 will undergo surgery before a recovery period of several months.
“The entire club stands with their defender during this extended period of absence and sends him their best wishes for a speedy recovery. Get well soon, Maik!"
Naturally, we join Lens in wishing Nawrocki all the best with his recovery. It may not have worked out for him at Celtic, but that is simply the nature of football, and there is every chance he will go on to be a big success in France.
He will now have to overcome this injury setback first, but such injuries are commonplace in football these days, and while it is a lengthy one, recovery is not usually an issue.
