Kyogo to Celtic takes U-turn after move had seemed set

There appears to be a last-minute twist in the Kyogo to Celtic story, just when it had looked like the move was only a matter of time.

Kyogo Furuhashi was an absolute superstar during his time at Celtic. His heroic status was achieved during the Ange Postecoglou era, during which he scored 54 goals in two seasons, despite missing a large chunk of time through injury. And while his numbers dropped after the arrival of Brendan Rodgers as manager, he still remained the starting striker for the Hoops right up until his move to Rennes last January.

We all know that the move to Rennes was a major failure. An ill-advised transfer from the very beginning. He would be gone less than six months later, joining Birmingham City.

Once again, Kyogo has failed to make his presence felt. In 25 appearances for Birmingham City, he has scored merely one goal. So, it is unsurprising that he is not getting enough playing time, and is being linked with an exit once again.

There has been a lot of talk regarding a return to Celtic today. In fact, it had felt like it was only a matter of time from some of the reports that had come out earlier in the day. Now though, it appears that there is a need to curb expectations a bit.

As reported by The Herald, Martin O’Neill would jump at the chance to take Kyogo back. But agreement on a percentage of the striker’s £40,000 a week salary is not the only potential obstacle standing in the way of an agreement. Celtic have been warned that the Japanese international striker is reluctant to give up the ghost in Birmingham and will need some persuasion to return to Scottish football.

It has always been quite clear that Kyogo wanted to make it in a top-five European league. In many ways, Birmingham City could be his last chance, even if they are currently in the Championship, and a return to Celtic might feel like accepting defeat.

Let's see if a move ends up happening or not. But do not hold your breath.
