Let's start with the obvious. Kevin Muscat has a phenomenal record when it comes to managing in Australia and Asia. He has won league titles with Melbourne Victory, Yokohama F. Marinos and Shanghai Port. The comparisons with Celtic hero Ange Postecoglou are clearly there and it is very clear that the Rangers fans are hoping for the same level of success.
After Steven Gerrard chose to turn the Rangers job, Muscat has quickly emerged as the favourite to get the job. While the Danny Rohl rumours were met with disappointment, the Ibrox fans seem to be on board with the idea of the Australian getting the job.
He had a brief stint at the club during his playing days, so there is an existing connection already. And one cannot deny the success that he has achieved in management so far.
That being said, it has not all been successful, like so many Rangers fans seem to believe. In fact, there is a one major failure that many of them are overlooking.
Kevin Muscat failure Rangers fans have chosen to overlook
Muscat has actually already had a job in European football. And when he did, it turned out to be a major failure for him.
Two wins, five draws and seven defeats. No, that is not Russell Martin's record we are repeating. That is what Muscat managed in his spell at Belgian club Sint-Truiden.
So, Muscat has not been a manager who has succeeded absolutely everywhere he has been so far. He failed in Belgium, his only stint in European football. And quite spectacularly at that, as you can see from the record.
Of course, we are not saying that just because it did not work out for him in Belgium means that he won't succeed in Scotland. Football does not work like that. But it is very clear that he is not some flawless manager whose appointment would automatically transform the Rangers overnight.
