One Celtic transfer link has been played down by a journalist in Denmark after some reports claimed a deal had been agreed. The Bhoys have been loosely linked with Brondby holding midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic over recent days, and some reported that a deal had been agreed.
The Bhoys are indeed on the lookout for midfielders, with Arne Engels expected to leave in the coming weeks. Martin O'Neill likely wants at least two midfield signings, and it looks as though the primary targets at this stage are Mika Baur and Gvidas Gineitis.
Talks are certainly ongoing over a deal for Baur, but it's unclear where the Hoops stand with Gineitis, who is said to carry a £12million asking price this summer.
Celtic rumour shot dead
According to journalist Farzam Abolhosseini, there is absolutely no truth in Celtic being interested in Bondby midfielder Tahirovic despite talk of an agreement being struck between the Hoops and the Danish club.
“They’re working on getting people off the roster, especially the high-salary guys,” he said on the Tipsbladet YouTube channel.
“That story about Tahirović heading to Celtic, there’s simply nothing to it. Nothing. Isn’t that crazy? It’s been going on for a long time [that the rumour has been circulating].
“And I have to admit that when I saw in the Scottish media the day before yesterday that it was now a done deal, they had, admittedly, cited Bosnian media, I thought again that I should look into it. I reached out to various sources and got the same answer again ‘there’s nothing to it, stop now’.”
Tahirovic, who is a Bosnia and Herzegovina international, was initially linked early in the summer transfer window, but it seems there is nothing in the most recent links, with Celtic's concentration seemingly placed elsewhere.
It's believed they can get hold of Paderborn star Baur for somewhere around £4.5million, while Gineitis is a more expensive target who may have to wait until Engels goes, or at least until a team shows a willingness to pay the £25million asking price. At this stage, only West Ham have bid for Engels at this point, but they are well short of the asking price, so a deal does not look to be close.
It will be interesting to see if Tahirovic becomes a target should Gineitis not work out, but at this point, it does not look to be a goer.
