It would be safe to say that things have not gone as Brendan Rodgers would have envisioned when he made a return to Celtic in the summer of 2023. Back then, Ange Postecoglou had left for Tottenham Hotspur and the decision to bring back the Northern Irishman, who had not lost a single domestic competition in his first run in Scotland, was seen as a statement of intent from the club.
It looked like Celtic were ready to move forward. And those with a keen memory will remember that there was a lot of talk about making progress in Europe at that time.
Well, we did see a bit of that progress last season as Celtic made it out of the first round for the first time in over a decade. That is why most fans had thought that the club would back Rodgers in this summer transfer window.
The opposite happened. Key players left and were not replaced in what might very well have been the worse transfer window in Celtic's history and that has raised a lot of questions about the board as well as the manager's future in Glasgow.
Insider makes worrying claim about Brendan Rodgers' status at Celtic
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Stephen McGowan said while speaking on the Press Box Podcast:
"There’s three million reasons why he won’t resign. We know how football works. Managers, if they want to go, want their contract paid up.
“And the very last club who want to pay Brendan Rodgers two-and-a-half million pounds to go away are Celtic. They barely pay two-and-a-half million for a centre forward, so why would they pay it to a manager who’s not honouring his contract?
“I think it’s a bit of a stand-off now. It looks like the relationship is in a very bad way from the outside, and it’s a case of who blinks first."
Well, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Celtic. To be honest, it has never felt like him resigning was ever a serious option on the table.
If Rodgers is to leave in the middle of the campaign, it would be because a club came calling for hs services. Of course, that is still very much a possibility.
He was linked with the Nottingham Forest job very recently. But Ange Postecoglou has already been brought in by them as their new head coach.
