There were a lot of heroes in the Celtic side on Sunday. It was by no means a typical performance, but the players dug in and held on. Taking the win on penalties was particularly sweet. Viljami Sinisalo was one of several standout players and surely laid claim to keeping his place again, ahead of the much-criticised Kasper Schmeichel.
Sinisalo stepped up for the previous game at Ibrox. Schmeichel was apparently unwell and unable to play. That ended in a 2-2 draw, and Sinisalo showed strength and character in goal. With Schmeichel still ruled out, he kept his place against Aberdeen in midweek. It was another tight game, despite Celtic's early lead. A terrific save from Sinisalo in the second half kept Aberdeen out and secured a 1-2 away win.
Sinisalo’s save at Aberdeen prompted many to remark that it was one that Schmeichel probably couldn't make anymore. The Dane has seen similar attempts go past him this season. Perhaps that shoulder injury is taking its toll.
Celtic knock Rangers out Scottish Cup at Ibrox
Could Sinisalo keep his run going with another trip to Ibrox? Well, Sunday’s match had him in fine form. He commanded his box superbly. Plucked crosses out, punched away when needed, and had several other great stops to his name. He came close to a couple of the Rangers’ penalties too, no blame attached there.
It’s quite a contrast from his previous Scottish Cup appearance. He played in the win against Auchinbeck Talbot in January. He attracted a few criticisms at that time. He didn't seem anywhere near as confident, flapped somewhat at a couple of high balls and left fans feeling nervous.
It was always the plan for him to succeed Schmeichel as Celtic's number 1. When the Dane signed on for another season last summer, it looked as though Sinisalo would have to be patient for another season. Maybe that patience is about to pay off.
Martin O’Neill has to keep playing Sinisalo
Sinisalo has laid down the challenge to Schmeichel and given Martin O’Neill a decision to make. With the World Cup playoff approaching for Denmark, Schmeichel won't want to be sitting on the sidelines. Especially if they can qualify and join Scotland and the rest.
It may be Schmeichel who needs patience and understanding now. Celtic are tracking down a league title and are still in the hunt for a cup. A chance to get revenge on St Mirren at Hampden beckons too. Sinisalo should be the man in goal for those games. He’s earned his place, and fans will be hoping O’Neill sees it that way too.
