Celtic had their best Champions League, and European, campaign in a long time this time around. They made it to the knockout phase of the competition for the first time in over a decade. Of course, they were helped by the new format and also a somewhat favourable draw when compared to previous seasons.

Celtic were handed a tough knockout draw though, as they came up against Bayern Munich. But Brendan Rodgers' side exceeded all expectations and took the Bavarian team to their limit.

Unfortunately, a 94th-minute goal meant that the second leg at Allianz Arena ended in a 1-1 draw. Celtic lost 3-2 on aggregate and were knocked out of the Champions League. But they did come home with a lot of plaudits and recognition.

The financial boost from Europe's top competition is one that cannot be overlooked either. As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic will take away €46.16 million (£38.225 million) from this season's adventure.

Of course, that is a huge sum of money, especially for Scottish clubs. This time around, the Rangers have made it to the round of 16 of the Europa League but will bring in only a fraction of that in revenue from the competition.

Thus, this should prove to be another record revenue year for Celtic. Now, the aim has to be to build on this success and be competitive in the Champions League every season.

They will not get a guaranteed spot in the competition next season, even if they win the Premiership. That is where it is important to show real ambition to progress. One can only hope that Celtic make their signings early in the summer and push for qualification rather than wait for it before making their transfer plans accordingly.
