Celtic once again let slip a good chance to win in Europe. After a boring first half, the Hoops looked much stronger after the break after bringing on Kelechi Iheanacho. The Nigerian striker, brought in as a free agent after the summer transfer deadline, scored once and perhaps should have gotten a couple more. A few others missed golden opportunities well to put the game beyond Red Star Belgrade.
Eventually, those missed chances cost them, as they have on so many occasions in the past. Red Star Belgrade equalised after some poor decision-making from Kasper Schmeichel, who rushed out of his position for no real reason and was left in no man's land as Marko Arnautovic found the back of an empty net.
While Schmeichel has received his fair share of criticism, so has Daizen Maeda. The Japanese international had started as the centre-forward but was completely ineffective. Brendan Rodgers took him off at half-time and it made a positive difference.
This has to be a low point for a player who was so brilliant for Celtic for most of last season. But after recently admitting that he wanted to leave in the summer, many fans appear to believe that he has 'downed tools'.
'He's downed tools' - Celtic fans blame player after draw vs Red Star
One Celtic fan wrote about Maeda: "Don't feel for him. He's not out of position. He's downed tools."
Another said: "I'm confused how this works. Haven't these players signed long term contracts? Yet, they down tools when they decide they want to pursue other options."
Maeda certainly does not look up to it at the moment. Perhaps the failed summer move has had an effect on his game, and it might take him some time to find his best form again, if he ever does that in a Celtic jersey.
Of course, many will question whether his 24/25 campaign was just a purple patch or not. Yes, he did score a ton of goals. But in the years before that, his finishing was never up to the mark. And it has been more of the same at the start of this season as well. It seems that he found his scoring boots and has then lost them once again.
Whatever maybe the case, it now looks like Celtic are better with Iheanacho as the focal point up top. As for Maeda, his time at Parkhead might be over in the near future.
