Evan Ferguson's name has been linked with Celtic, on and off, for years now. This goes back to before he joined Brighton & Hove Albion. Could the move to Parkhead finally happen this January? The Hoops are in need of a striker at the moment. And if things turn out as expected, the Irishman could be in search of a club as well.
Ferguson is currently out on loan at AS Roma. He has only managed to score three times for them so far, with two of them coming against Celtic in the Europa League.
On the other hand, there are rumours that AS Roma are pushing hard to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United. If that move does end up happening, the domino effect could lead to Ferguson's loan deal being cut short and the Irishman being sent back to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The latest reports coming out do suggest that is the direction in which things are headed. As reported by Corriere Giallrosso (via Glasgow World):
"Roma's transfer market isn't just a search for reinforcements, but also a careful purging of the squad. Gasperini has drawn a clear line, and anyone who doesn't fit into the plan is destined to leave. The most emblematic case is that of Evan Ferguson.
“His future in Rome appears sealed. The loan is unlikely to continue. Brighton is considering an early return, while Fenerbahce is interested in Turkey. Roma, however, is in no rush: they will first find a replacement, then give the green light to the transfer."
'Green light to the transfer' - Celtic fans will love Evan Ferguson news
If Ferguson does indeed become available, it would not be a simple task to sign him. Celtic are not the only club being linked with the Irishman. Fenerbahce appear to be in the running as well, and the Turkish side will have more financial power than the Hoops.
At this moment, finding the right team is the most important thing for Ferguson though. A stint at Celtic could do him a world of good.
As we have seen over the past few weeks, there are plenty of chances for the striker to score in Wilfried Nancy's team. Now, it is about putting them away. Someone like Ferguson could come in, score a bunch of goals and rediscover his confidence at Parkhead. That might tilt this transfer race in the Hoops' favour.
