Celtic Women lost to Rangers Women in the Sky Sports Cup today as Grant Scott managed his first Glasgow derby.
It was a thrilling game that saw two good sides go head to head, and it was Celtic who took the lead 16 minutes in after a great Maria McAneny strike.
Katie Wilkinson levelled things up from the spot, but Emma Lawton and Poppy Pritchard fired Celtic back into the lead. Laura Berry pulled one back before the half, with the player equalising in the 90th minute to take it to extra time.
Saoirse Noonan missed a penalty in the 100th minute of the game, and no other action was to be had as the tie went all the way. Claire Walsh and McAneny saw their attempts saved by Jenna Fife, and Rangers struck past Lisa Rodgers every time to take their place in the final against Glasgow City.
686 days since last Celtic win over Rangers
It has been a whopping 686 days since Celtic last got a victory over their rivals. It was St Patrick's Day and a Tash Flint brace sent the supporters home happy.
Under former manager Elena Sadiku, Celtic have struggled to overcome the top sides in the league, but fans had faith that would change under Grant Scott. Whether fans still believe will be another question, as opinion is mixed on social media following the defeat.
It was a match that Celtic should've had more from. A brilliant first half performance didn't mean much after a disappointing second half, and the Hoops didn't do enough with the chances they were presented with.
Manchester City loanee Pritchard was preferred over Noonan for this tie, and that certainly paid off, as her movement and penalty strike was a highlight of the game. The extra time penalty miss from Noonan will undoubtedly sting for the Irish international, but hopefully she can bounce back.
Defensive errors leading to both goals are another big talking point from the game. It seemed far too easy for the Rangers players to lose their marker today, and there's no doubt that some players needed to step up more than they did.
Big month for Grant Scott
It's going to be a massive month for Scott in February. Next week, Celtic take on Glasgow City in the SWPL, before a big tie against Hearts to potentially progress in the Women's Scottish Cup. Scott's side will face the Edinburgh team a week later in the league to round off the month.
Starting off February with a loss is disappointing, but there is plenty of time to bounce back. Celtic currently sit second in the Scottish Women's Premier League, but are behind Glasgow City by five points.
Celtic are tied on points with Hearts as well, so a win from both league games is necessary if the Hoops want to be in with a chance of lifting the title.
