Celtic were said to have pushed for the signing of former attacker Fares Ghedjemis, but their failed attempt was out of their control. Both the Bhoys and fierce rivals Rangers are said to have made advances for the Frosinone winger, but both fell short of a deal.
Celtic ended up signing Haissem Hassan from Real Oviedo to strengthen their wide ranks, and the Egypt international has shown flashes, but like many Hoops players of late, he has struggled for form.
Ghedjemis is yet to register a goal or assists so far this season, but Frosinone are happy with his contribution, even weighing up a new contract. Celtic and Rangers could have prevented that had they snatched the winger, but neither side failed with their attempts because of money or failure to convince the player.
Frosinone sporting director Regno Castagnini spoke to Radio Sportivo recently, and he confirmed that Frosinone managed to keep hold of Ghedjemis because of an ownership change that strengthened their hand.
“Ghedjemis wanted to leave, and I believe that when a player has the opportunity to improve, it’s right that he shows it," said the Frosinone chief.
“When the Clara Vista fund came in, since we no longer needed to sell players, it was decided that Ghedjemis would stay with us.”
He added: “We’re working on his new contract, so we’re satisfied. We’re doing things properly and calmly.”
Ghedjemis is only 24 years of age, and he impressed in Serie B last season with 15 goals and three assists from out wide, helping his side to promotion to the top flight. The newly promoted club have started well in the top flight, too, picking up 10 points from their first five games and only losing once so far.
Ghedjemis has not yet been productive with goals and assists, but he has been a key starter and will likely remain one.
