Former Celtic star slams team after Tannadice loss and delivers title race verdict

Peter Grant had a lot to say when asked about the title race and Celtic's loss to Dundee United.

Former Celtic assistant manager Peter Grant has given a brutal assessment of the title race, and Hoops fans will be disappointed by who he thinks will end up winning the Scottish Premiership title.

The Celts haven't been great this season. Inconsistency has plagued them throughout the campaign, and their latest setback against Dundee United has only added to the growing frustration among supporters.

Grant didn't hold back when reflecting on that performance, particularly when talking about the second-half performance.

He said on the Go Radio Football Show: "The second half, they were very poor. You can't make excuses, but the pitch was atrocious. You can see it wasn't watered before the game, and Jim [Goodwin] has done all things right, because I would have done the same 100 per cent, if I was going to play Celtic. You have to find a way to win.

"Like Martin O'Neill said, nobody will remember what the pitch was like in three weeks time. You have to go there, roll your sleeves up and you have to win games of football - and Celtic did nowhere near enough."

It's a damning but fair assessment. While the conditions may not have suited Celtic, the team should know well enough to adapt, and on this occasion, the side simply didn't. Too often this season, when plan A hasn't worked, there hasn't been a convincing plan B.

Grant also pointed to a glaring issue that has become one of Celtic's biggest problems - a lack of goals from their strikers.

He said: "[Benjamin] Nygren, if he had scored at the weekend, would have been on 20 goals. There's no Celtic striker even in double figures. That tells you where the problem obviously lies.

"Would it have not have been better to go two up top? I know [Kelechi] Iheanacho had to go off, but you could have got Nygren maybe with [Junior] Adamu when he came on. Get bodies in the box, because you're not going to get wingers dribbling on that pitch."

The point is hard to argue against. Oftentimes, Celtic have dominated possession and tried to overload the opposition, but when it comes to putting the ball in the net, we've lacked that edge. Whatever it's down to, it's an issue that has cost the Hoops valuable points.

Perhaps the most concerning part of Grant's analysis is his prediction for the title race.

He said: "In December time, I thought Rangers [would win the league]. I genuinely did. I thought Rangers made signings that can mix it up; they're more physical now. I’d rather be in Hearts’ position, but I still think Rangers [win the title]."

Could Celtic still win the league?

Celtic still has a chance to win the league, despite being in a very difficult position. We trail Hearts and Rangers, and are sitting in third place. Every game must be a win now; otherwise, things are essentially over.

Thankfully, there are players returning to action. Julian Araujo has missed the last two games through injury but could be set to play again after the international break. Alistair Johnston should be back in time for the split.

Exciting but scary times are coming, and right now, it's too difficult to predict who will go on and win the league.
