Celtic recruited quite well over the summer. That is in contrast to how things played out a year ago and clearly, improvement was made in that area and the club deserve credit for that. Of course, the fans did not agree with all the decisions they made, but some have proven to be the right ones already.
One of them has to be the decision to sign Kasper Schmeichel. Eyebrows were raised at the idea of replacing the retired Joe Hart with a player older than him.
Most fans would have liked to see the club make a long-term addition in that area of the pitch. But Schmeichel is proving the critics wrong with his performances and one could argue that he has been better in goal for Celtic than Hart was.
Schmeichel signed a one-year contract with the club. But there is believed to be an option for a further season in the deal. And the Danish international has dropped a possible hint that it could be activated at some point next year.
In-form Celtic player hints at contract extension
As reported by Sport Witness, Schmeichel told Tipsbladet:
"One thing at a time. It’s an option for another year, but we will take that at some point next year."
Based on current form, Celtic should not think twice about having Schmeichel between the posts for another year. He is performing at a very high level and has proven himself as a leader as well, doing a great job of replacing the presence of Hart in goal in more ways than one.
Of course, things can change quickly in football. But do not be surprised if Schmeichel is the one standing between the posts for Celtic next season as well.
The club did sign another goalkeeper in the summer in the form of Viljami Sinisalo. The expectation seems to be for him to develop into the first-team starter in the future. Let's see if that happens.
