Kyogo Furuhashi is set to leave Celtic. It is likely that the game against YB was his last for the Hoops. Unfortunately, despite finding the net three times, he could not score one final goal for the club as all of them were ruled out. With Champions League knockout phase qualification now secured, he appears to be headed to Ligue 1 to play for Rennes.
For most of the window, rumours have linked Kyogo with an exit. And as it turns out, there was something concrete behind the speculation after all.
Kyogo has enjoyed a wonderful time at Celtic since joining the club back in the summer of 2021. Not many hopes were set for him but the Japanese striker has gone on to win eight trophies, and score in finals, derbies and important Champions League games.
It will be hard for Celtic fans to say goodbye to Kyogo. He has endeared himself to the support since the day he arrived and was pretty much the face of the Ange Postecoglou era.
Fabrizio Romano confirms details of Kyogo's Celtic exit
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, it will be a permanent deal in excess of €10 million. Rennes manager Jorge Sampaoli said:
"We are getting it done, it should be sealed today…"
Goals have been a problem for Celtic in recent times, especially when up against tough opposition. They had to rely on an own goal from YB to win at Parkhead against the Swiss side at the very bottom of the Champions League table.
So, it remains to be seen how Celtic go about replacing someone as important as Kyogo. Will Daizen Maeda and Johnny Kenny see increased minutes at striker? Or will the club go out and sign someone who can come in and take the Japanese international's place in Rodgers' squad? Time shall tell but there is not a lot left in the winter transfer window.
