Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin was impressed by the performance of his side at Celtic Park on Wednesday night. United took home a point after coming from behind within three first half minutes to take the lead.
They went on to concede a leveller through Liam Scales in the second half, but it was still an impressive display from the visitors, with only Rangers having tested Celtic in the league so far this season.
Dundee United are in fine form, winning three of their last four games before arriving at Parkhead, and looked like a team with confidence on Wednesday night, creating opportunities until the end by leaving players up the pitch even when defending heavy Celtic pressure.
That allowed them to stretch the Bhoys on the break, and had they been more clinical on the breakaway they likely could have snatched all three points.
But Goodwin was pleased with the point, with his side becoming only the second team to take something from the Bhoys in the league.
“We showed a great reaction after giving Celtic a gift for the first goal,” said Goodwin. "We knew that we would have to suffer and dig deep in the second half – and Celtic can be relentless.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold on but I am very proud of my players. They dug in at the end and got an important result to keep the unbeaten run going. I also think we played decent football at times, as well as being resilient.”
He added: “Before the game, we would have said it was a decent point. But having led for as long as we did, of course we are disappointed. We aren’t going to over-celebrate a draw. But I am glad the players have something to show for their work. October has been a good month for us, points-wise. And that is after, in my view, leaving some points on the table.”
Scales not impressed with Celtic
On the other side, Celtic defender Liam Scales, who scored an own goal and a goal at the other end, said after the game: “It’s a bit disappointing, I think. We started the game quite well, and then a sloppy sort of ten-fifteen minutes, and we’ve kind of lost the game because of that.
“It’s disappointing, but I think we showed a lot of character in the second half to take control of the game. I think the ball just didn’t drop for us certain times in the box to go and get that winner, but I think it’s just a sloppy ten-fifteen minutes first half that’s cost us there.”
