It would be safe to say that this has been an underwhelming start to the season for Celtic. In terms of the table, they have been okay, although Hearts do lead them by two points. That being said, it is not just about the results but the performances as well. Nobody has really stood out for Brendan Rodgers' side as they have looked devoid of ideas already.
There are some players who have done better than others. And for all the criticism that Celtic have received for their recruitment, some of the new players fall under that category.
That being said, it looks like Chris Sutton remains unconvinced by three of Celtic's summer signings. They are Kelechi Iheanacho, Sebastian Tounekti and Benjamin Nygren. All three of them having starting on a regular basis for the Hoops since arriving.
Sutton wrote about the trio in his column for the Daily Record:
"Sebastian Tounekti dazzled in his first couple of games, but we don’t know if he has consistency.
Benjamin Nygren has popped up with some goals, but I wouldn’t judge him as a central midfielder and I’m yet to be convinced overall as yet. Kelechi Iheanacho hasn’t seemed mobile enough in the central striker role, though that may come."
Chris Sutton makes bold claim about three Celtic signings
Let's be honest, that is a fair assessment of those players. That being said, it is also worth mentioning that those are the few who have at least made a positive impact on the team.
Overall, Celtic's performances so far this season have been pretty toothless. And it would not be fair to put that on the new arrivals, who do need some time to adjust.
It should lie more with the players who have been at the club for such a long time, winning games and trophies on a consistent basis, but still have not been able to produce some quality football at the start of the season. It remains to be seen if they are able to find their form at some point. But right now, it is nowhere near good enough.
