Chris Sutton has said what we all know about Celtic's disappointing summer transfer window. The Bhoys wound up signing 10 players, but many of them were panic signings in the final stages of the window.

Celtic went into the final day of the UEFA squad registration window having failed to address key areas, and they clearly ended up signing players they did not go into the window intending to sign.

It was clear that Martin O'Neill wanted greater quality signed during the summer window, and it was clear he was frsutrated with what the board did.

Even down to the failure to sign Kelechi Iheanacho, who O'Neill said he wanted back, but Celtic waited weeks before offering him a poorly strctured deal, and they were then outbid.

O'Neill would later express a lack of confidence in his side qualifying for the Champions League, and that lack of confidence was backed up by his side's four-goal collapse in the second leg of the qualifiers.

O'Neill knew he was short of talent, especially after losing Arne Engels, who was not replaced, and he knew the timing of the signings did not set his side up for success in an early-season qualifier.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Sutton, who knows O'Neill well, has now said that his old boss was not pleased with the signings he got in the summer.

"I think he [O’Neill] was wrong to come out and say that he had doubts. I think that was a big mistake from Martin, but that’s how he felt at that time.

"I’ve never heard him talk like that before in his whole managerial career, but I just think if I was Martin I’d just want an easy life. What has he got going for him at Celtic at this moment in time?

"He didn’t get the players he wanted, in terms of trying to compete at the highest level in Europe, so he was let down there."

There is no doubt about that, and it's something we have been saying repeatedly since the summer. Some were blinded by the flurry of late signings, as though Celtic atoned for their poor business, but by that point the Champions League had already been lost, and it was clear that the quality of those signings were not in keeping with O'Neill's comments at the end of last season, when he warned that recruitment must be used to take the club forward.
