Things are not working out for Celtic at the moment and it is up to Brendan Rodgers to find a solution to their issues. Of course, fans will be sympathetic to the fact that he has not been dealt the best hand. That being said, despite that, the Hoops should have enough to be comfortably ahead of the competition in Scotland. But right now, that is not happening.
Hearts are five points ahead of Celtic, although the Edinburgh side have played a game more. But it is not just the point difference that will worry Hoops supporters.
It has been the overall quality of the performances which have let Celtic down. In the first six league games, they have managed to score just eight goals. In comparison, Hearts have managed 16 in seven matches. In fact, six of the eleven other teams in the league have outscored Rodgers' men.
That should never be the case. Many fans have complained that Celtic have often played safe football, passing it sideways and backwards when they are in possession, instead of showing some courage and adventure.
Chris Sutton claims Celtic player 'clearly doesn’t trust' his teammates
One player who has come in for a lot of criticism regarding this matter is Callum McGregor. But Chris Sutton appears to believe that it is because the club captain does not fully trust the players around him at the moment. He wrote in his column in the Daily Record:
"He likes to take the ball on the turn and knit things together but he clearly doesn’t trust the players around him because they keep losing the ball and he’s the one who has to mop up. You can’t blame him for taking safer options."
Well, perhaps there is some truth to that. That being said, it is also up to the club captain to get the best out of his teammates and make that midfield tick, which he is not doing to the best of his ability at the moment.
Some people even feel that the time has come to drop McGregor. That might be a step too far. But it is definitely time for the midfielder to raise his game a few levels.
