Martin O'Neill's return game was a moment to remember for Celtic fans. It was always going to be a big occasion considering what the club legend had achieved at Parkhead. But the 4-0 win over Falkirk and the brilliant win definitely lifted the mood after what had been a nervy week for the Hoops. Some are now even open to the idea of his interim stint being a longer one than first anticipated.
Of course, it is important not to get too carried away in situations like this. O'Neill is 73 years of age and was managing for the first time since 2019. It is clear that he can still get a result, but this cannot be a long-term solution for Celtic.
They need to bring in a permanent manager. But the result does give them some space. And if they can now go and win the Glasgow Derby at the weekend, it could truly be the start of a turnaround.
On the other hand, it looks like the club are busy revamping their coaching team, and not just looking for the next permanent manager. It is worth pointing out that, alongside Brendan Rodgers, John Kennedy also left. On the other hand, as reported by The 42 (via CeltsAreHere), Celtic had requested permission to speak with Chelsea's U21 head coach Calum McFarlane.
Chelsea reportedly agree to Celtic's approach for coach
There is a further update on the situation. According to CeltsAreHere, the report claims that Chelsea have reluctantly granted permission for McFarlane to discuss his future with Celtic. Talks have yet to take place between the two parties though.
It remains to be seen if Celtic are able to find an agreement with McFarlane. He is very highly regarded and if he did make the switch, one would think that it is almost certain that he would be making the jump to the senior setup.
As for Celtic's permanent manager search, it is still unclear where things are headed. They have been linked with names like Ange Postecoglou, Robbie Keane, Kieran McKenna, and Nicky Hayen so far. Do not be surprised if plenty others crop up over the coming days.
If O'Neill continues to do a good job then it would give Celtic the opportunity to take their time and not rush into any decision. But if the Hoops continue to struggle, they would need to make a decision quickly, which increases the chances of making the wrong move.
