Celtic are expected to add to their ranks in the upcoming January transfer window even though drastic changes to the squad do not seem likely. Bringing in a new winger is believed to be a priority for the Hoops next month but that might not be the only position they end up strengthening. They have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent months as well.

Celtic have a decent bit of depth in midfield right now and it was considered one of their strengths not too long ago. But their performances in the middle of the park in recent times have not been the most eye-catching.

They have not controlled games as well as Celtic would like. So, perhaps making an addition there would not be the worst idea in the world.

Carney Chukwuemeka is someone they have been linked with quite a bit. And one of Chelsea's latest decisions has boosted their chances of signing him this January, albeit on a temporary basis.

As reported by BBC, Chelsea are demanding Chukwuemeka's full £40 million release clause for his January exit. Or they could look to send him out on loan instead.

It goes without saying that that figure is well out of Celtic's reach. But one would think that not many clubs would be keen to shell out that kind of a transfer fee for Chukwuemeka, who has barely featured in recent times and is out of Enzo Maresca's plans.

That leaves a loan exit as the only real option in this situation. And that is where Celtic could come in. Realistically, they were never going to be able to sign Chukwuemek on a permanent basis. But now, it looks like another opportunity is present for the Hoops next month.
