Russell Martin is now officially the new manager of the Rangers. The announcement has been made by the Ibrox club. Half a year after being sacked by Southampton, he finds himself trying to compete with Brendan Rodgers' Celtic-winning machine. It is safe to say that this will be quite the task for the former Scottish international.
Of course, the Rangers do not have a great record with managers in recent years. Over the last four seasons, they have had four permanent ones and an interim boss on top of that.
Martin does have a history with the Rangers, having spent time at Ibrox on loan from Norwich City during his playing career. He will surely be hoping that this stint is a lot more successful than that one.
Interestingly, it does not look like he has gotten a warm welcome from his own club's supporters. Then again, that was to be expected when you consider the fact that the Rangers had been linked with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Marco Rose over the last few weeks. It is not hard to see why they might have been disappointed with the appointment of Martin.
Celtic will love Rangers fans' comments on Russell Martin announcement
Celtic supporters will have a good chuckle at some of the comments made by Rangers fans on the post announcing the appointment of Martin. One wrote: "Somebody want to explain to me how getting relegated with 12 points qualifies you for the Rangers job?"
Another wrote: "Can’t remember the last time rangers made a decision I agree with."
Let's wait and watch how things turn out for Martin at Ibrox. Celtic fans will know the value of not writing a manager off before he has even gotten a proper chance.
Just look at how Ange Postecoglou turned out for Celtic. Then again, the Australian was a proven winner before arriving at Parkhead. The same cannot be said about Martin at this point.
