Celtic are said to have identified a new goalkeeper target as they look to add depth between the sticks before the deadline. The Bhoys have until 5pm on September 3 to get their business done, but they have a UEFA deadline the night before, so realistically, their business will need to come before that.
Celtic's shortcomings in the Champions League served as a clear reminder of the business they still need to get done. A couple of midfielders, as well as a backup left-back and goalkeeper are required.
Viljami Sinisalo has proven himself as the starting goalkeeper up to now, enjoying a very solid start to the new season, and he was the best player on the pitch during that catastrophe on Tuesday night.
But he does still need backup and competition following Kasper Schmeichel's retirement in the summer, and it's one of the many surprising aspects of this Celtic transfer window, that it hasn't already been addressed.
Celtic linked with EFL keeper
According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are now interested in Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone, with the West Midlands club closing in on the signing of Joao Virginia from Sporting CP. Ex-Wolves keeper John Ruddy has also been linked with a return to Molineux.
Either way, all signs point towards Johnstone being axed ahead of the deadline, and the 33-year-old could be available on a cheap deal, given his age and availability. That would suit Celtic, and it may do them good to have an experienced head around to help push Sinisalo and guide him along the way.
Johnstone is actually a former England international, and he has Premier League experience from his time at Crystal Palace and West Brom, as well as at Wolves. He initially came through the Manchester United academy and had loan spells aplenty during his time as a senior player at Old Trafford.
The experienced keeper is likely to feel as though he can be a starter at Celtic, and that won't be a problem for Martin O'Neill, who needs genuine competition for Sinisalo to keep him at his best. Ultimately, if Sinisalo can't keep up his good form in the wake of increased competition, then he is not as ready as we think he is.
For now, he is likely to remain the starter regardless of who comes in, having put together a very solid start to the campaign, while he also did pretty well last season.
