Celtic are currently in a race with bitter rivals Rangers to sign Kilmarnock midfielder David Watson, according to Football Insider, with one factor likely to decide who secures his services.

Watson is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and the Hoops are interested in snatching him up. He has been in good form under Neil McCann this campaign and was the subject of a lot of interest in January. An official bid was even made for the Scot by Bolton Wanderers, but their offer of £500,000 was swiftly rejected.

It is reported that Watson would be keen to play Champions League football, and that could potentially decide where he ends up. So, depending on whether one of Rangers or Celtic ends up winning the Scottish Premiership, that could give them a massive advantage in the race for his signature.

Outside of Scotland, clubs from England remain keen on the midfielder, with Italian sides also impressed by his performances this season. By the end of the season, he will have plenty of suitors to choose from, so let's hope that the appeal of a massive club like Celtic will be too much to resist.

Adding more domestic talent

Celtic adding more domestic talent is never a bad thing, and he could end up following in the footsteps of legends like Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor. Hoops fans are always keen to support Scottish players, especially if they have the ability to help out on the biggest stages.

If we miss out on Champions League football but Watson is still interested, he could help us out in other European competitions, such as the Europa League or the Conference League. Of course, success in those fixtures could guarantee you qualification to the top tier of Europe, so it's a pathway we can offer, even if we failed to do so this season.

No matter what happens this season, Celtic will settle for nothing less than the title next season as well, meaning that he wouldn't have to wait long to play in the Champions League even if we weren't in it right away. He has proven that he has what it takes to help out in the league, and with higher-quality players around him and better facilities to help him grow as a player, we could have a star on our hands, especially under a new manager.

With no fee involved either, the Hoops should be jumping at the opportunity to secure the young talent. There is nothing to lose, but everything to gain.
