Celtic have been told they need a 'proper rebuild' if they want to dominate Scottish football. The Bhoys have had a difficult time of things this season, largely due to their struggles in Europe.
The Bhoys are top of the Premiership having lost only twice, with the most recent defeat coming against Falkirk on Sunday. But they have been a long way below the required standard in the Europa League, losing all three of their games so far, and they are unlikely to find their first win against a strong Besiktas side on Thursday night.
Another league title may well be on the cards for Celtic, but their chances of European success are next to zero, and there is a bad atmosphere at the club currently.
Fans are not happy with the way the club is being run, with the lack of ambition and lack of clear strategy when it comes to recruitment. On top of that, there is a clear lack of talent in the squad, and Martin O'Neill and his coaching staff have struggled to find solutions.
A player who has previously worked with, Richard Dunne, has now issued his take on the situation, and he said, as cited by the Daily Record: "It's unusual to see a run like this at Celtic.
"They need to settle down and get back to winning ways. Losing to Falkirk and struggling in European games shows that recent recruitment hasn't been right and they've lost their strength. We’ve spoken about the European losses to Benfica and Celta Vigo, but Celtic used to compete with the biggest sides in Europe, so they look a bit lost right now.
"If Martin O'Neill can rebuild their confidence, they should be strong enough to challenge, but they need a proper rebuild to become a superpower again."
Dunne is spot on
The recruitment has absolutely been the issue at Celtic. It was clear what the Bhoys needed during the summer window, and what the board tried to do was paper over the cracks.
They didn't sign a back-up goalkeeper until the last day of the window, they signed an 18-year-old as the only cover at left-back, didn't bother replacing heir best player in Arne Engels and filled the midfield with the signing of young or unproven signings like Joel van der Berg and Oliver Sorensen.
When you prepare to fail, you prepare to fail, and that's what Celtic have done.
