Celtic's squad might need a significant rebuild, as it has become pretty clear that they have left themselves significantly weakened by sanctioning the exit of key players without replacing them with those of similar quality. It is disappointing that we find ourselves in this position, having undergone the same thing in the summer of 2021.
Ange Postecoglou had joined Celtic as the club's manager that summer. Could he do the same in the near future as well, with Brendan Rodgers' future in doubt? We will find out soon.
Investment needs to be made, whoever the next Celtic manager is, or in the unlikely scenario that Rodgers continues on beyond this season. And one of the positions in need of strengthening is goalkeeper.
Kasper Schmeichel was past his prime even when he joined the club. But his performances have dipped significantly over his time at Parkhead. So much so that there are calls for Viljami Sinisalo to be made the starter although Rodgers has been reluctant to make that call. The Dane's contract expires next summer though and it is unlikely that he will be handed an extension based on his recent displays.
Celtic tipped to sign 29-year-old Scotland international
As reported by the Daily Record, Angus Gunn is a target for Celtic to replace Schmeichel next summer, according to former Scotland international Kevin Gallacher, who told The Sunday Post:
"Celtic have been credited with looking at him as a 2026-27 replacement for Kasper Schmeichel, whose deal is up next summer, so the long-term signs are promising, too."
Gunn is a full Scotland international and has had a successful career in England, playing for a number of clubs. He currently finds himself at Nottingham Forest, where chances have been hard to come by though.
In fact, Gunn has had a tough time even making the bench. The good news is, his contract runs out next summer. So, that could give Celtic a chance to sign him as a free agent. Or, Sean Dyche might take a liking and give him chances.
