Celtic have signed one striker as a free agent recently, reuniting Kelechi Iheanacho with Brendan Rodgers. The Nigerian international played his best football under the management of the Northern Irishman at Leicester City. The fans are hoping that we will see something similar happen at Parkhead, although he managed just four combined goals across Sevilla and Middlesbrough last season.
It would be a lot safer for Celtic if they signed another striker in hopes that at least one move works well. That was always believed to be the plan going into deadline day but moves for players like Kasper Dolberg and David Datro Fofana failed to materialise and they were left empty-handed.
The issue is, there is not a big pool of talent in the free agency market. Some intriguing names are still out there though. They continue to be linked with players like Patrick Bamford and Emmanuel Dennis, two names that are still available if the Hoops choose to make a move.
The Daily Record recently came out with a list of eight free agents Celtic could target. One of the names on there is that of Michail Antonio.
Celtic tipped to sign West Ham record goalscorer for free
Antonio has managed to recover recently and turned out for Jamaica this summer in the Gold Cup, coming off the bench on all three occasions. He has also started twice for West Ham United's U21 side in August in a bid to regain match fitness.
Antonio has been involved in punditry recently as well but has shut down rumours of a full-time move to holding the microphone. It looks like he is keen to go out on his own terms and wants to make a return to top-level football.
There is no doubt that Antonio has a lot of great qualities. He was a handful for Premier League defences in his prime.
Also, he is West Ham United's record goalscorer in the Premier League, having found the back of the net 68 times in the English top flight. Thus, there is little doubt about his quality.
The question is whether Antonio will be able to get back to the level we know he can reach. If he is able to do that, he would be a great addition to a club like Celtic. But any move would be risky. Should the Hoops go for it or wait until January before signing a different striker altogether?
