It is believed that Brendan Rodgers wants Celtic to sign not one, but two midfielders this summer. Benjamin Nygren has been brought in and there are rumours that he could be deployed in the number 10 role. But he has played the majority of his football on the wing. Also, with Jota out injured and Nicolas Kuhn potentially leaving, he might be needed on the flank.
Celtic should keep an eye out on the free agent market this summer. They have done that in recent years and brought in a couple of Premier League veterans, who have done well in Glasgow.
Aaron Mooy only spent one season at Celtic but was integral to Ange Postecoglou's side winning the treble. He had even managed to move ahead of Matt O'Riley in the pecking order, which goes on to show the level he was performing at. On the other hand, Kasper Schmeichel remains the club's number one in goal. Could the Hoops look to repeat the trick this summer?
The Scotsman recently brought out a list of free agents available to Celtic, Rangers and other Scottish Premiership clubs this summer. One of the names mentioned is that of Fulham captain Tom Cairney.
Celtic tipped to sign Premier League captain for free
Cairney has been at Fulham since 2015, making more than 350 appearances for the London side. At 34 years of age, he is no longer a starter though. The club captain only started three times in the Premier League last season.
The former Scotland international could be a smart addition for Celtic though. Of course, he would be a short-term signing. But he is capable of playing in the number 6, 8 and 10 roles. And there is undeniable experience he would bring to the table as well, having 144 times in the Premier League.
There is some confusion around Cairney's situation though. For a long while, it was expected that he would be leaving this summer as a free agent. Now, there have been some suggestions that Fulham have offered him an extension.
