With transfer fees continuously on the rise, free agent signings have become very vital in the modern game. In the past, they were viewed as cheap fixes. But now, even the biggest players on the planet are moving on Bosman transfers. Just look at Real Madrid, who have turned it into an art and brought in players like Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and more. A similar move for Trent Alexander-Arnold could be on the horizon. So, Celtic should keep their eyes open as well.
Of course, players like that won't join Celtic as free agents in their prime. But there are certainly quality ones who might.
Kieran Tierney is the perfect example although the pre-existing connection with the club certainly played its role. Could the club look to bring in another Premier League-proven player as a free agent next?
The Scotsman have suggested Callum Wilson as a potential free agent signing for Celtic and Rangers. Although they believe that the striker's reported £46,000 per weeks wages could prove a stumbling block.
Celtic tipped to sign Newcastle United player for free
With 49 goals and 11 assists in 127 appearances for Newcastle United, and 88 Premier League goals in total, there is no doubt that Wilson knows his way to the back of the net. So, on paper, someone like him should prove to be a solid addition for Celtic.
He is 33 years of age though and one has to wonder whether he is entered a steep downward trajectory, owing to his injury problems. Wilson has scored just once this season and played only 373 minutes of football. His contract runs out in the summer and it is not hard to see why Newcastle United might not be keen to extend the deal.
Of course, Celtic are no strangers to signing Premier League veterans. Joe Hart was brought in from Tottenham Hotspur for a £1 million transfer fee. Kasper Schmeichel and Aaron Mooy arrived as free agents. Jeffrey Schlupp is currently on loan from Crystal Palace. All of them were in their 30s when they were signed.
Celtic could do with another option at striker. Is Wilson the right fit for that role though, with both Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah scoring at a decent rate? A move for the Newcastle United player would only make sense if he is ready to take a significant pay-cut and willing to play the role of a third-choice centre-forward.
