It is very clear that Celtic's squad needs some fixing. They are simply not scoring enough at the moment and their midfield struggles to control games, especially important ones. Somewhat surprisingly, their defensive record has been pretty solid although there are clear areas where they can improve at the back as well.
For a long time now, Celtic have lacked a genuine option in defensive midfield. Tomoki Iwata could have been the guy but he was not really given too many chances to succeed and then left for Birmingham City, where he has done a tremendous job.
Many believe that Callum McGregor will benefit if he plays alongside a defensive midfielder rather than being the last man in midfield, a role which was thought to be short-term but he has been stuck playing for more than half a decade now. It does not make the most of his qualities though.
Quinny from CeltsAreHere has suggested that Uruguayan midfielder Nicolas Acevedo could be the solution for Celtic. He has been called a kind of no-nonsense presence that the Hoops have missed since the days of Victor Wanyama.
Celtic tipped to sign €4 million Uruguayan midfielder
Acevedo currently plays for Bahia in Brazil. And it is believed that he could be available for a transfer fee in the region of €4 million.
That falls under the kind of transfers that Celtic seem comfortable in making, which would help the chances of any move taking place. At the same time, the Uruguayan is 26 years of age. So, he should be entering his prime years on the pitch.
It has become pretty clear that Celtic's midfield needs a bit of a reshuffle. They have struggle to control big games for years now but the club have never really gone out and brought in a proper defensive midfielder. It is time to change that.
