Celtic failed in their search for a striker to replace Kyogo Furuhashi in this winter transfer window. It was a confusing move to say the very least, letting go of your starting number 9 in the middle of the season after making it to the Champions League knockout phase without having a replacement lined up beforehand.

Strikers like Kelehchi Iheanacho, Mathias Kvistgaarden, David Strelec and even Danny Ings were linked with Celtic in the days leading up to the close of the winter transfer window. But ultimately, they did not sign any of them.

Jeffrey Schlupp was brought in on loan on deadline day and he can play as a striker. But one would hope that we do not find ourselves in that situation.

The transfer window might be closed but clubs can still sign free agents. Could that open up a window of opportunity for Celtic to sign a former Premier League and La Liga winner?

Celtic tipped to make blockbuster Diego Costa move

Diego Costa was named in an article on Glasgow World which listed five free agent strikers Celtic could sign after deadline day. The former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid forward is without a club at the moment.

Costa's last spell was with Brazilian side, Gremio. He managed to score 8 goals in 26 appearances for the club. His contract ran out at the end of 2024.

In his prime, Costa was one of the best strikers on the planet. He won La Liga twice with Atletico Madrid and reached the Champions League final with them. He also lifted the Premier League title on two occasions while at Chelsea.

Of course, the idea of Celtic signing Costa sounds like nothing more than wishful thinking at this point in time. Never say never when it comes to football though.
