Celtic need another striker, even though Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah scored 53 combined goals last season, while one of them played mostly as a winger, while the other was largely a backup option. So, perhaps the Hoops do not need to go out and spend a significant transfer fee on another forward, and maybe it is worth keeping an eye out on the free agent market.
Of course, Celtic are no strangers to signing veteran players as free agents. Kasper Schmeichel and Aaron Mooy are two great recent examples of such moves working out fine for the Scottish champions. Could they look to repeat that trick with a striker as well?
Glasgow World recently put together a list of free agent strikers that Celtic and the Rangers could sign this summer. One of the names on that list is that of Edin Dzeko.
Of course, it is easy to not like that idea. Dzeko is 39 years of age. But he is one of the most underrated strikers of his generation and even more importantly, even at this point in his career, he remains in top form.
Celtic tipped to sign former Manchester City striker for free
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Dzeko scored 21 goals and provided 8 assists in 53 appearances and 3262 minutes of football. 7 goals and 4 assists of those came in Europe.
Also, Dzeko has played for some of the most successful clubs in world football. That includes Manchester City and Inter Milan. Thus, he is someone who knows what it takes to deliver at big teams, which will be vital at Celtic.
At the same time, he has shown the ability to deliver anywhere. He powered Wolfsburg to a Bundesliga title early in his career, scoring 26 league goals that season and 36 in total. Even over the last two seasons at Fenerbahce, he has managed 46 goals. At the international level, he has scored 67 times for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Those are the numbers that matter, not the one in his age bracket. Dzeko is an elite goalscorer and he will not only get goals in a Celtic shirt but make his teammates better as well.
Also, at 39 years of age, he is someone who would be happy to sit on the bench at times and understand that that is his role. That would help Brendan Rodgers rotate his squad and keep everybody content.
