Celtic are fresh from winning the Scottish League Cup. The fact that it came against the Rangers in the final at Hampden Park makes it even sweeter. But that does not mean that it was a classic performance from Brendan Rodgers' side. On the contrary, it raised plenty of questions about this team and the overall strength of the squad.

The midfield performance was particularly disappointing for many. On paper, it is arguably Celtic's strongest area on the pitch.

But some of their recent performances have been cause for worry. The display against Dinamo Zagreb in midweek was not great either.

Could that lead to an addition in the middle of the park in the January transfer window? There is one player who has been linked with a move to Parkhead in recent weeks as he struggles to get chances at Lyon.

Celtic could sign French midfielder in January window

As reported by Football Insider, Celtic could sign Mahamadou Diawara in the upcoming January transfer window. The Hoops have tried to get him on a loan deal with an obligation to buy, and Lyon’s current financial situation has given them encouragement that they could get a deal done. The midfielder is interested in a move away from the French club in a bid to gain more regular playing time.

Diawara was considered one of the best talents in French football not too long ago. But this season, he has struggled for playing time at Lyon.

Celtic were linked with a move for Diawara in the summer as well before they signed Arne Engels and Luke McCowan. Now, with the midfield in need of a bit of inspiration and the future of Odin Thiago Holm in doubt, could the Hoops try to sign the Lyon midfielder in the January transfer window?
