The upcoming January transfer window might be very important for Celtic. It is quite clear that they failed to meet expectations in the summer and the fans are not happy. The board is under pressure to make something happen in order to change those feelings and one can only hope that they make some significant additions in the winter.

The midfield is one area that has become worth discussing in recent times. While the likes of Benjamin Nygren, Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor are all quality players individually, together, that combination might not be the best.

On the other hand, we have seen the likes of Arne Engels and Paulo Bernardo struggle for game time. If that continues, they might want to leave in January and the club would need to bring in replacements.

A pretty interesting name could be about to become available in January though. He currently plays for Seattle Sounders in the MLS and the Mexican national team, and his contract is set to run out on December 31 of this year.

Obed Vargas is still just 20 years old but he has already made 127 appearances for Seattle Sounders. He has also appeared once for the Mexican national team and represented both USA and Mexico at the youth international levels.

Vargas mostly plays in central midfield but is also capable of playing as a defensive midfielder. He is in the 87th percentile when it comes to successful take-ons, 84th percentile in progressive carries and 88th percentile in touches. He is in the 66th percentile in interceptions and 64th percentile in blocks.

That just goes on to show the type of midfielder he is. And that might be the type of player that suits Celtic, who will always have a lot of the ball.

The opportunity to sign someone of Vargas' potential for free does not come around often. Celtic should definitely consider it, if it is possible.
