Celtic are expected to be busy in this summer transfer window. They have already announced the arrival of Kieran Tierney, who joined as a free agent at the end of his Arsenal contract. The Scottish international returning to the club in his prime, at 28 years of age, is a major coup for the Hoops. Perhaps a much bigger one than it is getting credit for.

Now, it looks like Celtic are closing in on another defensive addition. But this time around, it will be one with an eye on the future rather than the present.

As reported by the Greenock Telegraph, Celtic are believed to be on the verge of completing the signing of Isaac English from Morton. The defender is expected to sign a deal with the Parkhead side on Friday afternoon.

Obviously, English is not the type of player who will come in and make an immediate impact on Celtic's first-team. But he is someone capable of developing into a senior level defender in the future.

That being said, it is worth pointing out that Celtic have had a very bad record when it comes to promoting the club's youth academy graduates to the senior team. At the moment, there does not seem to be a pathway there.

The pressure is on managers to win pretty much every game at a club like Celtic. As a result, they are often reluctant to give genuine playing time to those rising through the ranks, instead depending on proven talent.

As a result, nobody has really come through the club's youth ranks and become a starter since Kieran Tierney. Hopefully, that will change in the near future because the Hoops need that to maintain a connection between the fans and the first-team.
