One could argue that Ange Postecoglou's biggest strength as Celtic manager was not his coaching, which was excellent, but his eye for picking out top talents while working on the club's self-imposed budget. And one of the best signings that the Hoops made during that era was that of Matt O'Riley, who was brought in from MK Dons for a fee in the region of £1.5 million.
A few years later, O'Riley would leave Celtic for Brighton & Hove Albion. And the club would fetch a €29 million transfer fee.
So, it is safe to say that it was a great deal for Celtic, although it was tough to say goodbye to arguably their best player. And they have definitely not been able to replace him since then.
On the other hand, O'Riley has had his troubles since leaving Celtic as well. But at the moment, he is enjoying a great run of form while out on loan at Marseille. The French club are now expected to try and sign him on a permanent basis from Brighton. What kind of a sell-on fee can the Hoops expect?
Celtic's sell-on percentage for Matt O'Riley confirmed
According to a report from Pete O'Rourke in Football Insider, Celtic are set to receive 10 per cent of Brighton’s transfer of O’Riley to Marseille should a permanent deal be completed in January.
Well, let's see if such a move does end up materialising or not. There is no doubt that the midfielder is a very good talent and has proven that for the French club.
Now, they are keen to sign him on a permanent basis. But there is not believed to be any kind of buy clause in the deal, which means that they will need to negotiate a fee with Brighton over it.
