Signing a striker has to be near the top of Celtic's transfer wishlist in this January window. The Hoops are lacking a consistent finisher at the moment. Johnny Kenny and Shin Yamada do not seem to be good enough to lead the line. Kelechi Iheanacho has struggled with fitness issues since his summer arrival, and when available, he has been mediocre at best.
Of course, Daizen Maeda was phenomenal last season, scoring 30-plus goals. But that seems to have been a purple patch for the Japanese forward, who has managed to score just 8 times so far in the ongoing campaign. The only positive is that he has 4 in 9 games under Martin O'Neill.
But, all things considered, Celtic need to strengthen up top. And it looks like a Bundesliga striker is on their radar, even though he has not scored a single league goal this season.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Celtic are actively exploring a move for Union Berlin forward Andrej Ilic. The Hoops have listed him as a priority option to bolster their options up top.
Celtic pushing to sign Bundesliga striker in January
Ilic has done well in terms of goal contributions this season, with 9 in 17 games. The issue is, he has scored only once. Is that the kind of striker that Celtic need at this point in time?
The Serbian striker has a positive goalscoring record at only two clubs so far in his career. Those are RFS of Latvia and Valerenga of Norway.
So, even if Celtic end up signing him, there will be question marks about his ability to deliver for the Hoops. One could also argue that the club need to bring in more than one striker in this window in order to make sure that they have enough options up top.
