Winning has never really been a problem for Celtic in recent times. When a Premiership and League Cup double starts to feel like a disappointment, it just goes on to show the standards that the Hoops have set for themselves. But that does not mean that everything has been perfect at Parkhead. Far from it.
There are plenty of aspects in which Celtic can do a lot better. One of them has to be providing their academy players a pathway into the senior team.
Kieran Tierney was the last player to make the jump from the academy and become a nailed-on starter for Celtic. It has been a long time since then and things needs to change in this regard.
It is no surprise that so many highly-rated youngsters have chosen to leave before even starting professional careers, rather than stick around and wait for their chances to come at Celtic. That is because they rarely have in recent years, no matter how talented you are.
Celtic player now close to joining Tottenham Hotspur
Now, Celtic seem to be on the verge of losing one of Scottish football's most highly-rated youngsters to the Premier League. As reported by Mark Hendry on Substack, Conall Glancy is poised to make the move to join Tottenham Hotspur. He is on the radar of many clubs down south but Spurs are leading the race to sign him.
Of course, that is a name that the majority of the fanbase would not even have heard of before today. But that does not mean that his impending exit does not continue a worrying trend.
Celtic can no longer develop first-team players anymore. Who will take the place of players like Callum McGregor, James Forrest and Tierney in the future? Right now, there no longer seems to be a connection between the academy and the senior team.
