Celtic appear to be ramping up their efforts to sign a goalkeeper having not yet managed to replace Kasper Schmeichel. The veteran goalkeeper retired after last season, with a shoulder injury effectively ending his long and successful career.

The Bhoys have since turned to Viljami Sinisalo to fill the number one spot, at least for now. Sinisalo has done well so far, conceding only once in Celtic's first three games of the season, barely putting a foot wrong.

Whether or not O'Neill wants to sign a number one or simply a keeper to compete with Sinisalo is unclear, but according to a fresh report, Celtic are chasing a £4million deal for a keeper, which would suggest they see him as a new starter.

Celtic hopeful of striking Toth deal

According to TeamTalk, Celtic are interested in a move for Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Balazs Toth, who is already said to be on board with the move.

It's claimed Celtic have discussed terms with Blackburn, and it's reported a fee of around £4million is expected to be settled on, although no agreement has been made just yet. The final details of the deal are still said to be under debate.

Celtic reportedly started concrete talks last week, and there is said to be 'growing optimism' over a deal, especially with Toth wanting to make the move.

The 28-year-old is Blackburn's starting goalkeeper, playing a big part last season and starting Rovers' first league game this season.

Celtic can, of course, offer European football to Toth, which will be alluring, and it's likely they have offered him the starting role. It would be a major surprise if Toth was to agree to leave his starting job in the Championship without some sort of assurance that he will start at Celtic.

What that means for Sinisalo remains to be seen, with the 24-year-old perhaps likely to feel hard done by, having done well towards the end of last season and the start of this season.

But at 24 years of age, Sinisalo has time on his side, and it's likely he will remain patient for now.
